Setting the stage for International Walk to School Month, five Natomas Unified schools will host festive early morning events this week or next that offer free breakfasts to any student or parent who walks to school that day. Riding a bike, skating or using a scooter qualifies,  too.

North Natomas Transportation Management Association is sponsoring the walk to school events as follows:

  • Natomas Park Elementary on Wednesday, Sept. 24, with breakfast served from 7 a.m. and 7:45 a.m.
  • Heron School, Friday, Sept. 26, breakfast between 7:30 a.m. and 8:15 a.m.
  • Witter Ranch Elementary, Friday, Sept. 26, breakfast between 7 a.m. and 7:45 a.m.
  • H. Allen HIght Elementary, Wednesday, Oct. 1, breakfast between 7:15 and 8 a.m.
  • Westlake Charter, Wednesday, Oct. 1, breakfast between 7:30 a.m. and 8:15 a.m.

Participating students who live too far from school to walk the entire way can park three blocks from campus, then walk, bike, scoot or skate the remainder.

Natomas is getting a head start in promoting “Walktober.” International Walk to School Day is Wednesday, Oct. 8, kicking off International Walk to School Month. Both events are designed to promote awareness of walkable communities worldwide.

Throughout October, Natomas students and families will be walking to and from school with hundreds of thousands of other children around the globe to promote better health, safety, traffic conditions, air quality and community ties.

Students at Natomas Park, Heron, Witter Ranch, Hight and Westlake can win prizes based on the number of times they walk, bike, skate or used a scooter to reach school in October. More information can be obtained by calling 419-9955.
