Hats off to perfection.

With proud parents and relatives looking on, nearly 140 students were honored by the Natomas Unified School District Board of Trustees on Wednesday, Oct. 10, for recording a perfect score of 600 in one or more subjects on California achievement tests.

Twenty-nine of the students achieved a perfect score for the second year in a row on the exams, called California Standards Tests, which are given to second- through 11th-graders.  Cumulative scores at each campus are used in creating an Academic Performance Index that ranks schools statewide.

“This is a great achievement for these students, their teachers and schools,” Board President Sue Heredia told the crowd.

“This is a testament to the caliber of our students, their supportive families, and the quality of teaching and learning that is happening in our classrooms,” Heredia said. “Congratulations students, parents and teachers on such a high academic achievement.”

At the Board of Trustees’ meeting, the honorees were called to the front of the room one-by-one, then awarded a certificate of recognition.  The 29 touted for repeat honors received an additional seal on their certificate. A total of 9,487 Natomas students took CST tests.

One Trustee, Scott Dosick, had special reason to smile: His son, Zachary, was one of Natomas’ “perfect” students. The fifth-grader at Westlake Charter Elementary School recorded a 600 score in mathematics.

State CST exams cover mathematics and English language arts, plus science and history sprinkled through seventh- through 11th grades. The tests are aligned to state content standards in each subject covered.

In the years ahead, there will be significant changes to the state assessment. Look in coming weeks for opportunities from Natomas Unified School District to provide input on state accountability requirements.

The CST tests for which Natomas students were honored Oct. 10 were administered in April and May, 2013.
