Health problems can keep a child out of class, impair learning, and potentially increase the risk of dropping out before graduating from high school. So a Natomas High School event will provide families with the opportunity to enroll or re-enroll in health coverage for 2015.

Families can research their options, get their questions answered, and fill out necessary enrollment forms from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.. Saturday, Jan. 24, in the Natomas High School library, 3301 Fong Ranch Rd. The District is partnering with a nonprofit agency, “All In — Health Care for All Families,” to offer the free event.

Open enrollment for California’s state-run health insurance exchange, Covered California, began Nov. 15 and ends Feb. 15. The service is a marketplace for consumers who do not have employer-sponsored coverage. No one can be denied coverage based on a pre-existing condition.

Subsidized policies may be available through Covered California, depending upon household size and income. For example, individuals in a family of four making between $32,913 and $95,400 annually may be eligible for some level of financial assistance. The exchange is online, at www.coveredca.com.

Residents planning to enroll in coverage at the Jan. 24 event at Natomas High School should bring:

1). Social Security number and date of birth for each family member enrolling

2). California identification card or driver’s license of the person applying

3). Proof of current income (W-2, tax return, or recent pay stubs

4). U.S. passport, legal resident card, or certificate of citizenship or naturalization documentation

5). Address

Covered California offers four levels of coverage, designated as Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum. At each level, all plans offer the same benefits, enabling consumers to base their choice on cost, provider network, anticipated need, and other factors.

Platinum plans pay 90 percent of covered health expenses, but they also have the highest monthly premium. For Bronze plans, the reverse is true: They have the lowest monthly premium but pay only 60 percent of covered health expenses.
