Heron School's promotion ceremony Friday was a historic occasion: This year's 8th graders mark the first group that could have enrolled as kindergarteners and attended the school throughout their elementary and middle school years. Students who did so were presented with a "Legacy Award."

Principal Amy Whitten presided over Friday's promotion ceremony, held under sunny skies before an overflow crowd of proud parents, friends and family members.

In all, about 100 Heron 8th graders were promoted. Whitten advised them to dream big: "You should be a little scared," she told the students. "If you're scared, it means you're dreaming big. We want you to dream big and fly high -- like Heron flyers."
