Inderkum and Natomas High schools were ranked among the nation’s top-performing high schools today after an analysis of more than 29,000 public schools for overall student performance, college readiness and serving disadvantaged students.

National recognition for both of Natomas Unified's comprehensive high schools came from U.S. News & World Report, a nationwide online news service that published a magazine of the same name for decades, awarded Inderkum a Bronze ranking as one of the top 22 percent of public high schools nationwide.

“We’re very pleased and very proud,” Superintendent Chris Evans said. “To have both Inderkum and Natomas High recognized, both our comprehensive high schools, is a tremendous honor. It's a tribute to years of hard work by staff and administration. And it highlights the great students we have in Natomas."

Natomas Unified was not made aware of Natomas High's inclusion until late Tuesday. Two other Natomas schools also were honored by U.S. News and World Report, which releases its “Best High School” rankings annually using three categories of distinction for winning schools – gold, silver or bronze. Natomas Pacific Pathways Prep received a silver and Natomas Charter’s High School a bronze this year.

Nationwide, 6,517 public high schools were cited by U.S. News & World Report, less than one of every four analyzed. Five hundred campuses received a gold ranking, 2,027 earned silver, and 3,990 received bronze. California finished second nationally – to Maryland – in the percentage of its public high schools receiving top awards.

U.S. News & World Report says its rankings identify the nation’s “top-performing public high schools” by providing an “unbiased picture of how well public schools serve all of their students – from the highest achieving to the lowest achieving – in preparing them to demonstrate proficiency in basic skills as well as readiness for college-level work.”

Public high schools are evaluated based on data obtained from the U.S. Department of Education, the College Board, statewide student testing, and from International Baccalaureate where applicable.
