School secretary Kelly West learned Tuesday that she had been selected Natomas Unified School District Classified Employee of the Year when Superintendent Chris Evans came to Witter Ranch Elementary School with a balloon bouquet and flowers.

“I had no idea,” West said of the honor.

West, who is serving her seventh year at Witter Ranch, tops a 16-person list of classified employee winners – one from each NUSD non-charter school and from the Education Center, Food Services, Transportation, and Maintenance & Grounds. All will be honored by the Board of Trustees at its public meeting Wednesday, February 12.

“Ms. West is a true team member of the office staff,”  colleagues wrote in nominating her. “She is always sensitive and caring to students, staff and parents. The students have commented on how they appreciate the help she gives them regarding a variety of issues. Ms. West is always helpful to staff and will stop her own work in order to help them with their needs.”

In addition to other secretarial duties, West emails and phones all members of the School Site Council and English Learners Advisory Committee to inform them of meetings. She also has worked in the summer at the district office to help with registration, and has been quick to volunteer for Witter Ranch enrollment nights, colleagues wrote.

“Ms. West is extremely proficient in her work performance,” they wrote. “She handles everything that comes her way with calm, politeness and patience.”

West said simply that she loves her job.

“It’s a good feeling to help people,” she said, smiling.
