New Two Rivers Elementary School Principal Colleen Perry had a very simple but eloquent message for parents who attended her Meet-and-Greet reception Tuesday night: I care deeply -- for your kids and for this school.

Mrs. Perry, who has taught the past 13 years at Two Rivers, spoke only for a few minutes to the crowd but made it clear that the school holds a special place in her heart, she’s proud of its staff, and she wants to continue its success.

Two Rivers is a California Distinguished School, a distinction awarded by the California Department of Education to innovative campuses that are closing the achievement gap while providing educational excellence to all students.

“I love this school,” Perry said, “and I wanted to make sure the person who led this school loved it like I did,” Perry said.

So she applied for the job herself – and got it.

“I’m very excited, proud and honored that I’m able to lead this school that I love so much,” she added.

Rather than spend much time in the limelight at Tuesday’s Meet-and-Greet, Mrs. Perry made brief comments to the crowd of several dozen parents and community members, including Sacramento City Councilman Steve Hansen. She then invited them to stay and chat with her personally about any questions or concerns they had.

"I’ll be here for questions as long as you like,” she said.

Besides her classroom responsibilities as a classroom teacher, Mrs. Perry has been the 4th grade team leader, the school’s English Learner lead teacher, and she has participated in a committee implementing a pilot program in academic supports and intervention.

Parents interviewed at Tuesday’s reception were impressed by Mrs. Perry.

“She seems like a real good person, real caring,” said Renee Perez, whose 5-year-old son is entering kindergarten this year.

Veronica Conerly said Mrs. Perry made a good impression on her, and “the fact that she’s been here as long as she has, that’s a good fit.”

Added Isaac Bojorquez, “I’ve heard nothing but good things about her.”
