Our message to Natomas Unified students is simple: “Attend-Achieve-Aspire.”

If students are not in their seats, they’re not learning, so attendance is vital to academic success.

September is Attendance Awareness Month, so now is an ideal time to remind everyone that students who miss even one day of school, miss a lot.

Natomas Unified is committed to increasing student attendance rates as part of its Board-approved Vision that, “All NUSD students graduate as college and career ready, productive, responsible and engaged global citizens.”

The following tips can help parents improve their child’s school attendance:

  • Make sure kids have a consistent routine for going to bed at night and getting up each weekday morning.
  • When bedroom lights get turned off at night, so should cellphones, video games and laptop computers.
  • Don’t take vacations that require kids to miss school.
  • Set an example by making it clear that attendance matters and that absences are unacceptable unless a child truly is sick.
  • Get to know your child’s teacher and other school officials, so all of you can work together in keeping the student on track.
  • For emergencies, car breakdowns or other unforeseen circumstances, develop a backup plan – perhaps with neighbors or family members – to get students to school on time.

Parents or guardians with questions about NUSD attendance policies should call their child’s campus or Dave Nickerson, of Student Services and Safety, at 561-5289.
