The Sacramento Police Department (SPD) and the Natomas Unified School District (NUSD) have partnered up to teach Witter Ranch Elementary students safety skills and interact with police officers in a positive environment. “(Our officers visit schools and) teach the children about being safe and the proper things to do in a situation that isn’t safe,” Captain Vance Chandler of the Sacramento Police Department said.

Students had a chance to ask the police department staff questions about safety matters and what their jobs are like. “I wanted them to have the opportunity to be able to see them (police officers) in a positive light, to see them as part of our community, and to see them and learn ways in which they’re able get support from them,” Patrick Birdsong, the Principal of Witter Ranch Elementary, said.

The curriculum that the officers taught the students was organized by a Sacramento Police Community Service Representative.

The Natomas Unified School District has had a long-standing positive partnership with the Sacramento Police Department. This is one more example of how we continually work together to support students.
