NUSD Certificated Staff Development Day

Teachers are learners, too.

That was evident more than ever today (Oct. 8), when no classes were held with students district-wide so that teachers, counselors and psychologists could gather together en masse for professional development at Inderkum High School.

Hundreds of employees attended the all-day training session, “Professional Development Day,” at which they learned from each other with the goal of enhancing student college and career readiness. In that spirit, many teachers wore T-shirts from the college they attended.

Today’s learning can impact NUSD classrooms and students for years to come.

In the morning, teachers in Preliminary Kindergarten (PK) through 6th grade met in grade-level groups, regardless which school they serve. Secondary school teachers met in content-area groups, for example, Math or Science teachers gathered together.

In the afternoon, teachers were scheduled to work with colleagues from their own school. Principals and site leaders planned activities designed to improve teaching and learning through lesson design and common formative assessments.

Specialty training groups were scheduled throughout the day, for example, nurses learning from each other. Or counselors. Or psychologists. Or Special Education teachers.

“Professional Development Day,” an annual tradition, is consistent with the district’s Board-approved Vision that, “All NUSD students graduate as college and career ready, productive, responsible, and engaged global citizens.”

Classified staff in numerous safety and operations departments — including Custodial, Grounds, Maintenance, Transportation, Warehouse, and Nutrition Services — also attended all-day training to improve their skills and knowledge. That professional development was held at Discovery High School.
