Everyone goes home a winner.

That’s the idea behind Art Night, a longtime tradition at Bannon Creek School.

Almost every month, students and parents come to the campus for a night session of creating art, learning new techniques, appreciating creativity, spending time together, and mingling with other families who share a common interest.

“The kids seem to really enjoy making art, it allows them to be creative,” said Terri Slingerland, a Bannon Creek speech therapist who oversees the sessions, often with help from retired school psychologist Jerry Kuzla.

Principal Amreek Singh added that Art Night is educational but with a casual, all-in-fun flair. “There’s no pressure,” he said. “You don’t have to be an artist. There’s no judging you. Just come and do the art.”

On one recent Art Night, kids and parents were learning how to make effective use of “hot” and “cold” colors.

“For some kids, this is the only exposure to art they have,” Singh added. “They don’t go to the galleries. They don’t know about public art, so they come here.”

Art created in the campus gathering is displayed in Bannon Creek’s main office for other students and parents to enjoy — so next month, maybe they’ll come to Art Night, too.
