Natomas Unified School District kicked off construction tonight of its first campus in seven years, Natomas Charter School’s STAR Academy, in a brief ceremony at Gloster Way and Prosper Road.

Shoveling dirt to formally launch the project were NUSD Board President Scott Dosick, Trustees B. Teri Burns, Lisa Kaplan, Ryan Herche and student Trustee Jzov Stith-Gambles, Superintendent Chris Evans, Natomas Charter School co-founders Ting Sun and Charlie Leo, and NCS Directors Phil Nanni and Peggy Wheeler. Sacramento Mayor Pro Tem Angelique Ashby and Assemblyman Kevin McCarty attended the festivities as well.

The 500-student elementary school should be ready for occupancy next year. It replaces the existing STAR Academy, located in a North Natomas commercial building.

The new campus will be funded largely through Measure J, a school bond approved by Natomas voters in November 2014.
