Danielle Alanis won NUSD’s poster contest for Earth Day last month, but her protect-the-environment message may be even more important now that summer is here and families will spend lots of time outdoors.

The 11-year-old’s winning poster depicts an aerial view of a spotless world, with green continents, blue waters and a simple title, “Earth Day,” an annual event celebrated worldwide to promote environmental protection.

There is no trash visible in Danielle’s simple poster. No plastic bags. No cigarette butts. No beer or soda cans tossed onto curbs or gutters. Her unspoken message is clear: It’s a beautiful world, without litter around.

Danielle feels strongly about protecting the environment. She recalls participating in a park cleanup, for example, and she remembers another occasion in which she walked onto a beach and found it strewn with debris, even in the water.

“It just kind of disgusted me,” said Danielle, who just finished the 6th grade at Natomas Middle School.

NUSD’s Earth Day poster contest was open to any student in 6th through 8th grades. Danielle won a $30 Wal Mart gift certificate for submitting the winning entry, which will be displayed in NUSD’s Ed Center.
