Let’s cut to the chase: This was only a drill, not an emergency. … But for 60 seconds today, students at NUSD schools ducked, covered, and held on as if a big earthquake had struck.

The “Great California Shakeout Earthquake Drill” helps schools, government agencies, and other groups enhance their emergency response.

NUSD schools also practiced classroom evacuation and several students from each school, with parent permission, were bused to the District Service Center as an exercise in off-site evacuation and reunification.

Similar earthquake drills were held today by millions of schools and other groups nationwide. The annual safety exercise is supported by groups ranging from the American Red Cross to the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the National Earthquake Hazards Reduction Program.

Safety is NUSD’s top priority, so if Mother Nature ever erupts, we want to be ready.
