Elementary students: GATE testing and referral

Natomas Unified will test all 1st-graders this year for Gifted and Talented Education, or GATE, unless parents or guardians opt their child out of the process. Testing will be conducted in February and March. Students in 2nd through 5th grades can be referred for GATE testing by their teacher or by a parent or guardian. The deadline for submitting referrals is Friday, Jan. 20. The following communications were sent to families of 1st-graders and 2nd-5th graders, respectively, on Tuesday (Jan. 17).

Regarding 1st-graders:

This is a message from Natomas Unified to inform you that all NUSD 1st grade students will be tested this year for Gifted and Talented Education, or GATE, a program for students with exceptional achievements and abilities. Unlike past years, 1st-graders need not be referred for testing this year. GATE testing will be done in February and March, by computer, take 30 minutes to complete, and will measure spatial skills test with no reading or writing. If you prefer that your 1st-grader not be tested for GATE, you can file an opt-out form by contacting your school. If you have questions, call 561-5288. Thank you.
