Hard work in classrooms and on sports teams paid off big-time Wednesday for five Inderkum High Tigers who signed college letters of intent — including Will Roberts, who will play football and study physics next year at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, one of the nation’s top-ranked academic universities.

“It’s my dream school, so I’m super stoked to go there,” said Roberts, a straight-A student, International Baccalaureate scholar, and a star lineman and team leader for the Tigers’ football squad.

Full or partial scholarships were earned by Anthony Canaday, basketball, who will attend Presentation College; Max Upchurch, basketball, Multnomah University; Shymir Mitschan-Baldwin, basketball, California Maritime Academy; and Amelia Hicks, golf, California State University, Sacramento.

College letters of intent are offered only to athletes who shine both academically and in high school sports.

“Finally, every dream that I’ve worked so hard for has come true,” said Hicks, a three-time Most Valuable Player of the Tri-County Conference. “I’m really nervous because I know (the CSUS golf team) is really good. But I’m excited because I love the coach, I love the team – and it’s close to home.”

Mitschan-Baldwin, a point guard, said she was grateful to receive a college basketball offer after her senior year was decimated by injury. “Somebody still gave me an opportunity to play in college,” she said. “It’s a great feeling.”

A star point guard, Mitschan-Baldwin was on pace to shatter Inderkum’s school assist record before suffering a knee injury. She plans to study international business and logistics at California Maritime Academy.

Canady was a two-year varsity basketball starter and helped lead the Tigers to a league championship. “This is something I’ve wanted ever since I was little,” he said of signing a college letter of intent. “I’m really excited. I’m ready.”

Upchurch leaves Inderkum as a leader of the basketball squad and one of the school’s top all-time scorers. “It’s a big deal because I’ve been looking forward to it my whole life,” he said of Wednesday’s signing. He plans to major in youth ministry or global studies.
