Nine Natomas High School students won AP Scholar Awards recently for exceptional achievement on 2015 Advanced Placement Exams. Only about one of every five students worldwide who took AP exams received similar honors.

The College Board’s AP program provides the opportunity for exceptional high school students to take rigorous college-level courses and earn college credit and/or advanced placement for successful performance on AP exams.

Angel Hernandez topped the list of Natomas High School winners by receiving the “AP Scholar with Honor Award for averaging 3.25 and scoring 3 or higher on four of more Advanced Placement exams.

Nearly hitting that threshold were “AP Scholar Award” winners Kanwalprit Bagri, Dylan Chima Sanchez, Emma Colombo, Trevor Gomez, Marilyn Gonzalez, Alexandro Guerrero, Roland Herbert, and Beili Huang.

Research consistently shows that AP students who score a 3 or higher on AP Exams – based on a maximum score of 5 – typically experience greater academic success in college and have higher college graduation rates than students who do not participate in AP.

Most four-year colleges in the United States provide credit and/or advanced placement for qualifying scores on AP exams.

AP offers 34 different college-level courses and exams. Each exam is developed by a committee of college and university faculty and AP teachers, ensuring alignment with rigorous college-level standards.

Of this year’s Natomas High School AP award winners, four are sophomores or juniors – Kanwalprit Bagri, Dylan Chima Sanchez, Beili Huang, and Angel Hernandez. They have at least one more year to complete college-level work and possibly win another scholar award in the AP program.
