No such thing as a free lunch? ... That's exactly what Natomas residents 18 and under received today (June 11) at a celebration of NUSD's summer meals program.

Barbecue chicken or apple sausage were today's entrees, and the festivities at American Lakes School included music and a free farmers market of potatoes, tomatoes, onions and squash.

The giveaway promoted NUSD's serving of free lunches at nine campuses until July 31 -- and free breakfasts at six schools.

Much of the food was obtained from Sacramento or Central Valley farms in keeping with NUSD Nutrition Services' push this year to provide, when possible, fresh fruits and vegetables grown locally or within California. Much of the ingredients for a garden salad on today's menu came from West Sacramento. Nectarines also came from West Sacramento, while the the apple sausage was from Gilroy, and the milk was from Sacramento-area cows. Produce for the complimentary farmers market came from Pacific Star Gardens organic farm in Woodland.
