They’re leaders or role models or academic standouts, they’re different ages, different genders, different races – but all are exemplary in their own, special way.

The Natomas Unified Board of Trustees honored more than 200 students tonight for representing the District Vision, which is: “All students graduate as college and career ready, productive, responsible, and engaged global citizens.”

Honorees could have demonstrated outstanding qualities in community service, leadership, grades, arts, personal responsibility, or any other way that exemplifies NUSD’s Vision. Winners were selected by their schools and applauded in the Oct. 14  ceremony at Inderkum High School that was attended by hundreds of family members and friends.

Parents of the Vision standouts received a letter containing personal remarks from the teacher who nominated their child.

“(Isabel) has started a ‘Pet Food Drive’ to help a local shelter, been involved in the District One Parks Leadership Academy for Youth and nominated for N Factor awards,” read one nomination. “She works tirelessly to hold herself to the highest academic standard. The world would be a better place if there were more people like Isabel.”

Associate Superintendent Keven MacDonald explained the significance of Wednesday’s ceremony to the large crowd.

“Our District’s Vision focuses on the future but serves as a concrete foundation for our organization,” he said before honorees were introduced. “Your students are being honored this evening for exemplifying the foundation on which our Vision is built.”

Here are how some excerpts from nominations made by teachers:

·         Xavion is a very bright and enthusiastic member of our class. He shows a keen interest in all his work. Xavion is conscientious and dependable. He enjoys the challenge of complex math problems and reads chapter books. He thrives as an IB learner, as a great thinker, caring, open minded and principled.

·         Christopher was struggling in reading at the start of the school year last year. He worked very hard in class, in intervention, and at home and developed his reading skills. He persevered and improved and became a fluent reader as a result.

·         Neviah is a quiet, humble and honest student who is actively engaged in her school community through Drama, Yearbook, Photography and Student Leadership. She is also very involved in her community as a volunteer at Heart for the Hungry, a local food bank.

·         Cecilia exemplifies everything we would hope all our Nighthawk students to be: she works her hardest and tries her best, she is kind and works well with others, and she is thoughtful, focused and engaged in her own learning. Even when faced with peer pressure she rises above and shines in all she does.

Honorees in tonight’s ceremony were selected both from district-operated schools and independent charters.
