Think of Isai Leon Casillas, when you read Natomas Unified’s Board-approved Vision statement.

Think of Lorianne Talaba.

Think of Mariah Cabrera Zernik.

Think faces, not words on paper.

Trustees honored more than 250 students last night who exemplify NUSD’s Vision, which is, “All NUSD students graduate as college and career ready, productive, responsible, and engaged global citizens.”

Winners were selected by their schools for demonstrating outstanding qualities in community service, leadership, grades, art, personal responsibility, or any other quality that exemplifies NUSD’s Vision.

Put simply, these are student role models, kids of character, who clearly have made an impact on students and staff.

While friends and family members looked on Wednesday night (Oct. 19), 178 of the Vision honorees walked one-by-one across a makeshift stage at Inderkum High School’s football stadium to shake hands with Trustees, Supt. Chris Evans, and other district leaders.

Vision winners received a certificate containing personal remarks from the teacher who nominated their child.

Here’s what was said about Isai, a 3rd-grader:

“Isai is an amazing (English Language) student who has diligently dedicated himself to his academic growth. He has shown amazing growth in language arts and math, but especially math. He spends his time during recess helping the janitor clean up the campus and helps anyone he sees in need. His love for school and others is evident in everything he does.”

Lorianne, a 2nd-grader, was described as “principled, caring, responsible, safe, empathetic and  engaged.”

She never needs a reminder to turn in her homework or follow the school rules,” her teacher wrote. “She is on time to school every day and treats others with tolerance and respect. She is a great listener and helper. She works hard and asks questions when necessary. She is amazing!”

Mariah, a 12th-grader, has embraced the Inderkum’s most academically rigorous program, International Baccalaureate, and she’ is a college ready, productive, responsible, and engaged global citizen,” her teacher wrote.

“In addition to her academic responsibilities, Mariah is an integral member of our student body as a Varsity Cheer Captain and is now an Associated Student Body officer. Mariah has embarked on a mission to create a series of online TED talks for her peers, to assist them in emotional health, organization and motivation.”

Honorees at the Board’s Vision ceremony, an annual event, attend both district-operated schools and independent charters within NUSD boundaries.
