NUSD Community,
As we have been sharing with you, the Natomas Unified School District (NUSD) is in the process of changing how members of the Board of Education are elected to office from at-large elections to by-trustee area elections. As part of that process, stakeholder engagement from our community is vital, and we appreciate the comments and input that we received from the public during the first map hearing at the October 27, board meeting. We continue to seek stakeholder engagement and are adjusting our timeline to take engagement directly to our community.
Seven months after Trustees formally announced in December 2020 that they would be directing staff to move elections to by-trustee areas, we were officially notified in July 2021 by an attorney representing local clients that we had 90 days to finish this process or face financial legal consequences. This would have undoubtedly taken money away that supports students. After multiple efforts to negotiate the settlement that would allow us to continue with a similar timeline, the attorney for the plaintiffs offered to delay his lawsuit if the Board could take action before Thanksgiving. This adjustment will reduce litigation liabilities (public money taken away from students). So we are adjusting our timeline to hold a Special Board Meeting on Monday, November 8th at 5:30 pm and then move forward with approval of By-Trustee Areas maps to our next regularly scheduled board meeting on November 17.
At the first map consideration hearing on October 27, the majority of the Board of Trustees made it clear that their desire was to have in person input on the maps that were presented. As such, our Special Board Meeting will be in-person. The details are below:

There will only be one item on the agenda for consideration. In addition to in-person public comments, there will be a new expanded E-comment process. Staff will read your name, your topic or topic title and the first 3 sentences or near equivalent to be heard out loud at the meeting. In addition, light snacks will be served for those in attendance.
