Capital Valley Conference All Academic Team of wrestlers 2019

Inderkum High School wrestler Carter Slay led the league in the most important statistic of all this year – grade point average. Slay’s 4.67 gpa ranked first on the Capital Valley Conference’s All Academic Wrestling Team. (Slay is far left in the photo below.)

The All Academic squad consists of the best scholar-wrestler on each of the league’s teams: Bella Vista, River Valley, Antelope, Yuba City, Woodcreek, Roseville, and Inderkum. Honors are based on current-year gpa.

Inderkum Coach August Wesley was instrumental in forming the All Academic team last year, so it is becoming a tradition. This year its members were recognized during Capital Valley’s conference wrestling championship at Inderkum recently.

Other members of the league’s All Academic team are Sperro Tannous, Woodcreek, 4.41; Nathan Ramirez, Yuba City, 4.33; Derek Dunn, Antelope, 4.25; Josh Provins, Roseville, 4.12; Reno Renier, Bella Vista, 4.05; and Edward Rodriguez, River Valley, 4.0.

Slay, a freshman, was one of six Inderkum wrestlers with grade point averages of 4.0 or higher. Others were Fernando Nalin, 4.33; Aaron Pannu, 4.28; Luke Christensen, 4.2; Christian Slay (Carter’s brother), 4.17; and female wrestler Elise Larry, 4.0.

Cumulatively, the Tigers’ varsity team had a grade point average of 3.12 this year, Wesley said, representing the sixth time in seven years that the squad exceeded 3.0 in gpa.

Good grades may not earn takedowns on the mat, but they sure earn respect off it. Well done, Tigers!
