Physical Fitness Test (PFT) Suspended for the 2020-2021 School Year

On September 18, 2020, Governor Gavin Newsom signed into law Senate Bill 820. SB 820 prescribes that, as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic and the need to comply with state and local health guidelines, the administration of the physical performance test shall be suspended for the 2020–21 school year.

Physical Fitness Test (PFT)

Who tests? Grades 5, 7, and 9
When? February to May
Content tested? Physical Fitness
Test format? Performance tasks assessed by PE instructors
Test purpose? From the CDE: The main goal of the test is to help students in starting life-long habits of regular physical activity.
Description: From the CDE: The PFT provides information that can be used by (1) students to assess and plan personal fitness programs; (2) teachers to design the curriculum for physical education programs; and (3) parents and guardians to understand their children’s fitness levels. This program also provides results that are used to monitor changes in the physical fitness of California students.
