August 2016

Dear Heron Families,

Welcome to the 2016-2017 school year at Heron K-8 School! Our first day of school is Wednesday, August 10th. Our 7th and 8th graders begin at 8:05, and our K-6 students begin at 8:15. Please see the attached Announcements for more information regarding the start of the school year. Coffee and refreshments will be served in the quad on the first day of school, and parents are encouraged to join us once our students have begun instruction at 8:15. Mandeep Biring, our new Assistant Principal, and I will share our goals for the upcoming year, highlighting our Responsive Classroom strategies and our STEAM focus (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Math). We now have 25 teachers who have been trained in Responsive Classroom over the last two summers, and we will continue to strengthen these practices throughout the school in order to ensure that our students are actively engaged in a safe and welcoming learning community.

All Heron staff and families are also invited to kick off the new school year with a Back to School Ice Cream Social on Friday, August 5th from 4:00-6:00, bringing our community together and providing an opportunity for our students to meet their teachers before school starts. The Heron PTSA will be hosting this event, and they will be providing information on upcoming school events and the multiple opportunities we have for families to be involved at Heron. Class lists will be posted on the Minden Way Gate at 4:00 on August 5th and Kindergarten letters will be mailed home, letting you know who your child’s teacher is and inviting you to a special Kindergarten Welcome on Monday, August 8th. Every effort has been made to create classes that are strategic to students’ needs and as balanced as possible; it is important for parents to understand that requests for class changes will not be considered prior to the start of the school year. However, please know that it is important to me that every child at Heron has a positive and engaging school experience, and I will always be available to hear and address any concerns you have regarding your child’s education.

I believe we owe it to our children to do whatever it takes to support their academic achievement and personal growth. This commitment takes trust and partnership between our administration, our teachers, our staff, our families, and our students.  We have exciting growth ahead of us \with our new middle school building and Science Labs under construction, our STEAM focus, and our commitment to providing each child with a high quality K-8 education that prepares our students for future success. Our partnerships need to be strong in order to keep us moving forward. A K-8 school provides a unique opportunity to provide students with a continuity of teachers, classmates, programs, and expectations, leading to greater academic achievement and improved confidence. I look forward to working with you this year to create this continuity, and I am eager to see our Heron Flyers as we celebrate the beginning of an exciting school year!

In Partnership,
