Hundreds of NUSD students participated in “May is Bike Month” challenges or events designed to showcase the health and environmental benefits of bicycling and other alternatives to motor vehicles, such as walking, scooting or skateboarding.

Lori Lewis, NUSD’s environmental support manager, said the annual month of recognition is a fun way to heighten awareness about how everyone can play a role in saving energy and creating a brighter environmental future.

Lewis helped to coordinate “May is Bike Month” events at South Natomas elementary schools, while the North Natomas Transportation Management Association (NNTMA) assisted various North Natomas campuses.

“I made my mom get her bike and ride with me – it was so fun!” said one Two Rivers Elementary School student.

In a six-county Sacramento regional contest challenging students to ride their bicycles and log their miles during “May is Bicycle Month,” Witter Ranch Elementary finished first in number of trips taken, 17,082, and total miles traveled, 8,562. Eight other NUSD campuses finished in the Top 15 in both categories. Results are available here.

Lewis organized a team of NUSD Ed Center and Service Center staff to participate in a similar local challenge.

Bannon Creek School held a “Bike Rodeo” in which obstacle courses were set up to demonstrate basic bike safety and how to properly navigate road signs.

Numerous NUSD campuses organized walk or bike to school events in which students gathered in the morning at a neighborhood park or other meeting place, then proceeded to campus under adult supervision.

Sacramento Police Department Officer Corey Johnson participated in numerous campus safety presentations during “May is Bike Month.” He also donated and fit many NUSD students with bike helmets.
