For the third straight year, Inderkum High School has been ranked among the nation’s top-performing high schools by an analysis of more than 20,000 campuses for service to all students, including disadvantaged populations.

Inderkum was the only NUSD campus to improve its standing in the newly released Best High Schools Rankings, to Silver after Bronze finishes in 2015 and 2016. NP3 and Natomas Charter equaled their rankings of the past two years – Silver and Bronze, respectively.

The national recognition came from U.S. News & World Report, a widely known online news and information service that published a magazine of the same name for decades.

Overall student performance on assessment tests was taken into consideration, along with graduation rates and college readiness, using Advanced Placement test data as a benchmark. Performance by disadvantaged students was a factor.

Inderkum and NP3 placed in the top 12% of schools analyzed, while Natomas Charter ranked in the top 30%. Natomas High School was not listed this year but received a Bronze award in 2015.

Only about one of every three schools studied received honors in this year’s Best High Schools Rankings. A total of 20,487 schools were analyzed, of which 500 received a Gold, 2,109 a Silver, and 3,432 a Bronze rating.

U.S. News and World Report said its ranking methodology is “based on these key principles: that a great high school must serve all its students well, not just those who are college bound, and that it must be able to produce measurable academic outcomes to show it is successfully educating its student body across a broad range of indicators.”

Among U.S. states. Maryland, Florida and California, respectively, were the states with the highest percentage of schools receiving Gold and Silver.

U.S. News worked with RTI International, a global research firm, to compile the Best High Schools Rankings.
