Students will decide which animal teeth would be the best to have for a day. They will develop a logical argument, construct their paragraph, cite evidence based on a story titled "What if You had Animal Teeth!?" that was read to them and use prior knowledge about the animal that the child chose.
Assessment/CFU
Students will write an opinion piece in which they introduce the topic by stating their opinion, supply reasons for the opinion, and provide a sense of closure. The students will have a complete paragraph to be assessed.
Opening/Warmup/Connecting Prior Knowledge
- Read "What if You Had Animal Teeth!?"
- brainstorm on a poster the animals that were in the story and details about their teeth
- Connect prior knowledge about the animals in the story and write information on the poster.
- Divide the students into groups based on the animal that they picked. Put all those students into one group and Have them brainstorm why the teeth they chose for the day are great teeth to have.
- Then they come back together in their animal teeth team and try to convince me why those teeth are the best. It becomes a debate where the teams try to make me think those teeth are the best. I sit in a rolling chair and as the students come up with opinions I move my chair closer to that team and agree with them or disagree and tell them I need a stronger detail or reason. They get so excited as my chair moves around from team to team....for those who have a hard time articulating their thoughts they are using Heads Together with their team to help come up with ideas or repeat ideas to eventually use in their writing.
- Now the students create their face with the animal teeth to put up in the classroom with their writing (TPT activity)
- Eventually we head into Rough Draft for Step-up-to-Writing and begin with Topic sentence as a class, four or more detail sentences independently, and a closing sentence with the class. We then proof read and end with end with a clean copy.
