Students will be able to identify at least three character traits of Ali Baba, the main character in the story. Students will support their traits using evidence from the text.
Assessment/CFU
Students will turn in completed list of character traits with evidence at the conclusion of the lesson.
Opening/Warmup/Connecting Prior Knowledge
Ask students, "What are character traits?"
Give time to discuss in groups or with a partner.
On the board, write down the words character traits and come up with a definition for students to refer to.
Also, write down physical characteristics with a definition.
Example:
- character traits: aspects of a person's behavior and attitudes that make up that person's personality. Often shown with descriptive adjectives, like patient, honest, or jealous.
- physical characteristics: defining traits or features about your body. The first thing you see when you look at someone could be their hair, clothes, nose, or figure.
On a piece of paper, have students brainstorm two character traits they would use to describe themselves as a person. Next to each character trait, have them include some evidence for why they said that about themselves. Model for students an example:
Active: I am active because I spend a lot of my free time doing physical activities, such as running, biking, dancing and hiking.
Have students work and share out as a group.
Tell students that today we are going to be examining the character traits of the Ali Baba, the main character in our story.
Brainstorm with students adjectives that they think describe Ali Baba. After coming up with a list, have students choose three adjectives (or they can use different ones) and have them look back in the text for an example that supports the adjective. Have students include a page number, as well as a brief description of their evidence. Collect work at the end as a CFU.
