Assessment/CFU
Sentence Patterning Chart:

Word Trading Game:

Writing – Dinosaur Discovery!:
Have students discover and draw a new kind of dinosaur. They can use their journals or classroom resources for help. Model again how a teacher completes a two-step pictorial: 1st: sketch lines lightly on paper and 2nd: draw over lines using dark or colored markers. Ask them to label the parts and name the dinosaur.
Dinosaur Paragraph:
Use the earlier Venn diagram or 2-column chart comparing the Herbivores/Carnivores and T-Rex and Stegosaurus. Ask students to use these charts to work in pairs to develop one sentence that follows the topic sentence:: There are many ways T-Rex and Stegosaurus are different. When sentences are completed on sentence strips or index card strips, ask groups to read and post their sentences (to double-sided tape, in pocket chart, to wall). When they are posted, lead class in a choral read of the collaborative paragraph.
Alternate Activity:
Show and discuss YouTube video: Bill Nye, The Science Guy & Dinosaurs
Opening/Warmup/Connecting Prior Knowledge
Dinosaur Timeline:
Create a basic timeline listing the three major dinosaur periods from prehistoric times (within the Mesozoic Era were the Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous Periods) in relation to the beginning of human life. You can divide class into pairs or trios and provide 1 illustration of drawing of a dinosaur from one of the 3 periods. Ask small groups to discuss which time period they guess their dinosaur lived in and have them develop 3 reasons why that might be so. Then ask student groups to share their guesses and reasons and provide them with either: a) a confirmation of their guess and ask them to stand under that timeline period with their picture, or b) provide them with the correct answer and ask them to stand under that timeline period with their pictures.
Lead class discussion in what sources or clues they would have needed to help them make their guesses. Point out the difficulty of making decisions with too little or no information.
