Assessment/CFU
* Students retell key details to their peers.
* Students will write at least one sentence with details on each strip (labeled: who, what, where, and when); Then combine their sentences to summarize the story in writing in the following lesson.
Opening/Warmup/Connecting Prior Knowledge
* Recall elements of story (character, setting, plot/sequence). Remind students importance of paying attention to details; and that it helps them to understand and enjoy story more. Set purpose of lesson: for them to listen to important parts of the story and then be able to retell to peers and write parts of a story on strips/ or graphic organizer. Then, their responses will be used to help them write a summary of the important parts of the story in the following lesson.
* Read Aloud of Frederick by Leo Lionni
*During and after reading, ask and answer questions about key elements.
* Have students retell their versions of key details in the text making sure to include (who, what, where, when) to a peer.
*Do guided writing for each strip:
- Character: Who was in the story? Who was the main character? Who were the supporting characters?
- Students write their responses on strip.
- Setting: Where did story happen?
- Students write their responses on strip.
- Plot: What happened? What happened in the beginning, middle, and end? When did it happen?
- Students write their responses on strip.
*Use product to determine student understanding of identifying key elements.
