Deprovision Chrome devices
Overview
To manage Chrome devices, admins first need to enroll the devices to their domain. Once enrolled, admins can view their devices in the Google Admin console and deprovision devices that are no longer in use, including Chrome devices that are returned or obsolete. Remember when using the Forced re-enrollment policy to deprovision devices that are no longer managed by your domain.
Chrome devices that have been enrolled display a status of Provisioned within the device list. The last sync time indicates the most recent time it has synced the device policies you set in the Admin console.
Deprovision Chrome devices
To remove devices that are no longer active and to clean up your Admin console, you can deprovision Chrome devices. Deprovisioning will do the following for selected devices:
- Remove device policies, device-level printers, and access to Kiosk Mode (including Public Sessions)
- Prevent the ability for the device to be enrolled in the domain. To provision the device again in the future, admins must follow the steps in the re-enrollment section.
- Return licenses associated with the device(s) to the license pool. These licenses may be used to enroll same model replacements for perpetual orders (or any replacement for annual subscription orders), and must comply with the License policy.
- Remove the serial number from the default (“Provisioned”) view. Select “Deprovisioned” in order to view a list of deprovisioned devices.
Do the following to deprovision the devices:
- Sign in to the Admin console at https://admin.google.com.
- Go to Chrome devices > Devices.
- In the device list, select the provisioned or pending device(s).
- Click More Actions and choose Deprovision.
- In the warning message that appears, click Deprovision to complete the process.
Re-Enroll a Deprovisioned Device
Common reasons for re-enrolling a deprovisioned device:
- Repaired device is returned
- Misplaced device is found
- Accidentally marked as deprovisioned
To re-enroll the device, it first must be moved into a ‘Pending’ state within the Admin console by doing the following:
- Under Chrome devices > Devices, access devices under the ‘Deprovisioned’ filter.
- Select the device(s) you want to re-enroll.
- Click More actions and select Move to Pending.
- In the reminder that displays, click Move to Pending.
- Wipe the device if you haven’t already.
- Follow the manual enrollment process or check to ensure automatic enrollment is enabled prior to login. Learn more about enrollment.
Notes:
- When the device is in a Pending or Provisioned state, it can be enrolled into the domain via auto enrollment for eligible organizational units.
- Re-enrolling or re-provisioning the same device will not consume an additional license. Learn more about Chrome device licenses.
- If you have Forced re-enrollment enabled, your user will be prompted for their account credentials to enroll the device in your organization after they wipe the device.
