NUSD Community,

The academic and social-emotional toll that this pandemic has had on our youth is unmeasurable.  We’ve seen how some of our students have really struggled despite supports that have been put in place to help them such as daily teacher office hours and the Virtual Tutoring and Wellness Center. Given the circumstances surrounding the negative impact the pandemic has had on student learning and to provide some hope for students who may need it right now, we have requested that the NUSD Board consider a resolution tonight at the January 20th Board meeting that specifically addresses 9th-12th grade students to help them be successful and to stay on track for college and career. In partnership with the Natomas Teachers Association, we have also reached a tentative agreement on a process that can be implemented pending the Natomas Unified School District Board’s review of this resolution tonight.

By approving the resolution, the Board would be temporarily amending the grading policy for the 2020-21 school year to provide students additional opportunities to remediate D and F grades even after the semester has ended, with the implementation of both “No Credit” and “In Progress” grades.  The modification would allow students time to work with their teachers or designated staff members to complete the necessary coursework to demonstrate proficiency of the content, and it’s in direct support of our Theory of Action for Student Success. One of Natomas Unified Core Beliefs states that “Every student can learn and succeed.” It will be “the district’s practice that students are supported not as where they were or solely where they are academically, but where they can be”. As such, “student access will be focused on where students can be and the support needed to help them get there”.

We want our students to be successful, and we recognize that can be difficult at this time. This resolution being considered is just one more action we can take to continue to provide our students every opportunity to be on track to graduate as college and career ready. More details will follow after a decision is made by the NUSD Board.
