Edwin, who plans to attend Azusa Pacific University, said he can use the $500 for books and other college obligations.

“I was shocked out of my mind,” Edwin said of receiving the award. “I just thank God. I give God all the glory.”

Edwin has overcome hard times times in his childhood – including the death of his mother when he was 10 – to become an exemplary student, a standout football player, and a leader of Natomas High’s “Obey God Club.”

In nominating Edwin for the scholarship, School Resource Officer Lilia Vasquez said that “Edwin’s excitement for life has taught others to raise their personal expectations.”

“I can attest to Edwin’s commitment to service and leadership,” she added. “Edwin also takes great pride in helping others while having a positive demeanor.”

Vasquez’s nomination letter also cited accomplishments by Edwin that included:

Edwin said he has big dreams for his future. He’d like to play professional football, for example, and he’s also interested in becoming a writer, perhaps working in real estate, perhaps serving in ministry.

He wants to be successful in life so that he can give back to others. “Ultimately, helping kids, families all across the world,” Edwin wrote in applying for the scholarship. “Building parks, jobs and schools for the community.
