Healthy students perform better at school.

So Natomas Unified is sponsoring a Health and Wellness Expo for Sacramento-area residents of all ages from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, March 29, in the South Natomas Community Center, 2921 Truxel Road.

Blood pressure and cholesterol screenings, fitness classes, safety information, and health insurance consultations will be among attractions at the expo, which has no admission fee but suggests a $5 donation for fitness classes.

The goal is to create a one-day program that consolidates numerous health-related resources at one location. A limited number of tote bags and flip-the-pages First Aid guidebooks will be handed out to early attendees.

Natomas School Readiness and Parent CORES are helping to organize the event. Hearing, vision, dental, speech and developmental screenings will be available for children. Participants in a library informational session will receive a free children’s book.

Incoming seventh-graders, with proof of insurance, can receive a free Tdap vaccination to immunize them against Whooping Cough, Tetanus and Diphtheria. Such booster shots are required by state law unless families obtain an exemption.

UCD’s Trauma Prevention and Outreach program will provide information about car seat safety and proper fitting of helmets, said Carla Najera-Kunsemiller, an NUSD employee helping to organize the event.

Fitness classes will include Zumba, Kaia Fit and Turbo Kick. Representatives from the UC Davis Nutrition Education Program, Health Net, North Sacramento Family Resource Center, and the Sacramento Food Bank and Family Services will be among participants
