Heron School’s STEAM program got a multimillion-dollar boost today when 7th- and 8th-grade students moved into six new classrooms, two new science labs, and a new video production studio. The project also includes new restrooms and an outdoor learning space.

“It’s really exciting because of our STEAM focus,” Principal Amy Whitten said, referring to the project’s impact on Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics. “These new learning spaces provide even more opportunities for kids to engage in science and technology.”

Move-in was timed to coincide with Winter Recess, so students immediately began learning in the new facilities after returning Jan. 8 for the new year. Some fine-tuning and finishing touches are expected in weeks ahead, but construction is complete.

Whiten said the new classrooms, featuring natural lighting and modern technology, will enhance middle school students’ sense of belonging in the school, which serves Kindergarten through 8th grade. The new construction paves the way for removal of leased portables.

Heron’s outdoor learning area, located directly outside the new science labs, will allow teachers to present lessons in the fresh air once weather warms. Heron also received a new basketball court as part of the construction project.

Heron’s improvements are the latest in a series of NUSD projects the past three years to enhance facilities district-wide, consistent with our goal of college and career readiness.
