Principal’s Corner

July 2019

Dear Nighthawk  Family,

Welcome to the 2019-2020 school year!  I’m honored to serve for a third year as Principal of Natomas High School.  With nearly 19 years in Natomas Unified School District, most of which were affiliated with NHS in various roles, and especially as a long-vested community member, I have been inspired by seeing NHS grow from a new campus being built in the 1990’s to the thriving school of today.  At Natomas High, we are a comprehensive, AP Capstone school, using Career Technical Education in Health, Engineering, Digital Media, Automotive, and Building & Construction Trades Pathways, along with traditional programs in athletics, arts, music, and student activities, to support students to be college and career ready.

As we SOAR into a new school year, it’s a great time to be a Nighthawk!  There is much to build upon following last year’s achievements, including full accreditation from the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, increases in students graduating A-G eligible, and growth in advanced placement enrollment.  We are continuing the success and expansion of our AP Capstone Program, CTE Pathways, Advanced Placement courses, athletics, arts, student activities and traditions. This year, we are thrilled to be launching our PreAP 9th grade courses. Our goal is that each of our Nighthawks will join and achieve in an advanced placement course, a CTE pathway, or one of our programs while here at Natomas High.  In this exciting time of success, I look forward to partnering with you in supporting our students to act with Safety, Optimism, Achievement, and Respect; graduating empowered to choose the future and SOAR into it with success!

Throughout the summer and coming school year, please find important school information through our website and Infinite Campus.  Should you need additional help, please feel free to contact our office. Our office will be open daily during the summer from 8:00 am to 3:30 pm to meet any needs you may have.  Beginning August 7, our office will open at 7:30am.

Priority Fall Check-In will be held for all of our Nighthawk students in the NHS Library at the following times:

Wednesday, July 31 at 8-11am & 5-7pm – Open to All Classes

Thursday Aug 1 at 12:00pm-3:00pm – Open to all Classes

Friday, August 2 at 8:00am – 1:30pm – Freshman Link Crew Celebration

During this time, students will turn in important documents, receive their course list, check out textbooks, and have an opportunity to pay for items with the school bookkeeper.  All documents and directions will be available on our website and can be completed by parents/guardians at home for students to bring to Check In.

Freshmen are invited to attend our annual Link Crew Celebration on Friday, August 2, from 8:00am to 1:30pm in the NHS gym.  During this time, a Freshman Parent Welcome will take place in the NHS Theater at 8:15am, and parents are welcome to again join students at 12:15pm for the completion of the check in process.

Our school day begins at 7:55 am and ends at 2:54 pm. To help facilitate collaboration between school staff, school starts late every Wednesday at 8:55 a.m.  However, the first day of school, Wednesday, August 7th, is not a Late Start Wednesday.  The first day of school will begin at 7:55 am.

At our Back to School Night, Thursday September 12th, from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m., you will receive more information from your student’s teachers about classroom procedures, expectations, communication channels and the curriculum. As we rely on active family participation, you will also have an opportunity to sign up to volunteer for school-wide activities and committees.

Again, welcome to our new school year!  I am confident that with our collaborative partnership, we will make this a great educational experience for our Nighthawks!  If you have any questions about our school, programs, or expectations, please do not hesitate to contact us.

It’s going to be a great year! GO Nighthawks!  SOAR.. It’s the Nighthawk Way!
