Week of Mar 9 - Mar 13 Greeting Panther families, This week marks the start to the final quarter of the school year - we are now down to 9 weeks of school remaining. This week students are finishing the College Research Unit with Oral Presentations. We began presentation late last week and will continue into this week. Additionally, we will dedicate the entire class period on Thurs, Mar 12 to a Restorative Justice Circle to highlight Women's History Month.

Week of Feb 17 - Feb 21 Hello Panther families, I hope everyone enjoyed the second of back-to-back three day weekends. This week students will begin to research information for their selected colleges. Students will take on the role of a college recruiter and present information to their classmates to persuade them to want to attend their selected colleges. Students will research information such: tuition costs and associated fees, majors & courses offered, aspects of campus life, along with much more.

Week of Jan 27 - Jan 31 Hello Panther families, It's hard to believe but here we are in the final week of January. This week we are transitioning to the beginning of our next project, College Research. Some of the questions students will address will include: What is college? Is college important? What is the difference between UC and CSU? In addition to the research needed to complete this unit, students will also be expected to present information& findings in an oral presentation.

Week of Jan 20 - Jan 24 Hello Panther families, I hope you all enjoyed the 3 day weekend. Before we left for the weekend, I challenged students to do something that would honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Hopefully, they mentioned something to you over the weekend. This week students wll complete their Future Self Facebook profile that they've been working for the past week. It is not an actual Facebook account, but merely a Google Slides template with Facebook adornments. In the "profile" students are asked to create a bio for their future selves including what impact and legacy did they attain. The project will be DUE at the end of class on Fri, Jan 24.

Week of Dec 16- Dec 20 Hello Panther families, Here we are: the last week of the first semester! Students do not have any new assignments. The focus this week is for students to complete and submit past due assignments. ALL assignments must be submitted by 4pm on Wed, Dec 18. Students have been given multiple reminders and ample class time to complete all assignments. Week of Dec 9 - Dec 13 Hello Panther families, We are entering our last full week of the semester. This weeks, students will conclude our unit of Disaster Prepardeness. Students will create a Google slideshow detailing their personal disaster plan. Not only will they complete a plan, students will also evaluate the effectiveness of their plans. Furthermore, ALL make up and past due assignments will be DUE Monday, Dec 16 for inclusion on the first semester report card.

Week of Dec 2 - Dec 6 Hello Pather families, I hope you and your student(s) enjoyed the Thanksgiving Break. It's hard to believe, but there are now less than three full weeks before the end of the semester. This week, we will jump back into the current Natural Disaster/Emergency Preparedness Unit. Students will review all of their previous research to begincreating an Emergency Preparedness Plan.

Week of Nov 18 - Nov 22 Hello Panther families, As we head into this, the week before our Thanksgiving Break, students will now move into creating an Emergency Preparedness Plan. They will refer to all their previous research and create the plan. Students will also be challenged to ask their own families what is the emergency plan at home. If asked, please feel free to have a discussion with your student.

Week of Nov 11 - Nov 15 Hello Panther families, We are now entering our 3rd week of the Natural Disaster/Emergency Preparedness Unit. Students so far have begun research on natural disasters as a whole. In the course of the research, students are making the connection to the emergencies currently happening and the need to have a plan. This week, students will use the questions they generated last week to guide research this into emergency situations and how to best prepare. Students will also continue research into worldwide natural disasters and their effects.

Week of Nov 4 - Nov 8 Hello Panther families, We are entering the second week of our unit on Natural Disasters & Emergency Preparedness. The students will finish the first part of their research which focuses on natural disasters as a whole. They will have discovered facts about major disasters that have occurred throughout history. This week we will transition into the "Inquiry" portion of the unit where students will generate the questions used to help solve the problem of being prepared in the event a disaster strikes. In addition to the questioning, student will also research & identify the most important steps to take before, during, and after a diaster strikes. There will be a brief pause on Tuesday, Nov 5 as students will have a guest teacher because I will be chaperoning a school field trip.

Week of Oct 28 - Nov 1 Hello Pather families, This week, students will begin a new unit, Emergency Preparedness. This week students will begin the research portion of the unit. They will research & discuss natural disasters that have struck around the world and research & discuss the most concerning diasters for the state of California.

Week of Sept 23 - Sept 27 Hello Panther families, This week students will begin the process of answering the questions they created in groups last week. We are still working in the unit of "Creating a Positive School Community". Students will review the questions they formulated last week, begin research to answer the questions, note and cite the sources where they found the information. They will also continue collaborate in their groups.

Week of Sept 16 - Sept 20 Hello Panther families, It's hard to believe that we are about to begin our sixth full week of school. I just want to say thank to everyone who was able to make it out to Back to School Night on this past Thursday evening. It was a pleasure meeting meeting many of you. In class, we are currently in the our first unit, Creating a Positive School Culture. Students have been working on defining what it means to have a positive school culture. They have also been practicing doing online web research with an emphasis on choosing reliable site to complete searches. This week students will work to answer the question, "Who are you and what makes you unique?". There will be several acitivities designed for students to take an instropective look at themselves and articulate their talents, skills, and beliefs.

Autobiographical Narrative Week of Apr 8 - 12 Hello Panther families, It's hard to believe but here we are with one week remaining until our Spring Break. Before we go, students willl compose a brief Autobiographical Narrative. The narrative will be written from the perspective of the significant contributor that students chose previously. Students will use the information they gained from prior research to draft the narrative. Rough drafts will be written during class on Monday and Tuesady, and final drafts will be typed during class time on Wednesday (and Thursday, if needed). After that, students will have time to work on any missing or necessary make up assignments before we head to a much needed (for everyone) break.

College 101 (con't) Week of March 18 - 22 Hello Panther families, This week, we will continue with our College 101 Unit. Students spent last week choosing a college/university to research. In class discussions covered community colleges, public & private college/universities, international choices, and professional colleges. Students spent time research salient information relating to the college of their choice. This week, students will take the information gathered and use it to create a persuasive script to accompany a video that they will create. In order to create the video, students will be exposed to the video platform, WeVideo. Students will act as a representative of their chosen college.

Hello Panther families, On Monday, Dec 2, students will begin the first part of a new unit titled High Demand Device. Students will research the evolution and changes of high tech, high demand devices. They will then design & create their own high demand devices using the information gathered from research.

Upcoming Assignments

Week of April 22 - 26 Hello Panther families, Welcome back from Spring Break! It's hard to believe but there are only FIVE weeks remaining to the end of the school year. As we make our back to the classroom, students will begin by designing a 4 panel comic strip that highlights their Spring Break. Instructions are posted in the Google Classroom, please feel free to log into your child's classroom if you would like to see the detailed instructions.

Week of Mar 11 to Mar 15 Hello Panther families, We have started our new unit, College 101. Students will become a representative for a college of their choice. They will research that college and present the research to their classmates in an effort to have students choose to enroll in their represented college. Skills practiced throughout this unit will include: proper internet searches, brainstorming & ranking, note-taking, market research, establishig a target audience, persuasive writing & speaking, large & small group communication. Additionally, all make-up assignments for 3rd quarter will be DUE by 3PM on Monday, March 11. Students were informed of this date over a week ago. Students with missing assignments have been addressed individually and offered in class time and during lunch to finish and submit assignments.

Week of Feb 18 - Feb 22 Hello Panther families, This week, students will begin research of a historically significant African American. Last week, we introduced the unit by discussing the difference between famous and significant, and discussing the roles that African Americans have played in American history and society. Students chose a historcally significant African American from a variety of fields - names ranged from Harriet Tubman to Jesse Owens to Quincy Jones to Barak Obama. Students will research the significant contributions these leaders made and choose a presentation mode. Presentations may be a choice of one of the following: Tri-Fold Board, Song, Poem, or Autobiographical Narration.

Week of Jan 27 - Feb 1 Hello Panther families, We are now to the end of the City Planning Unit. This week students will submit their city slideshow and then begin preparing for the oral presentation portion of the project. Slideshows are DUE at the end of class on Monday, Jan 27. (Students have had 4 class days to complete the slides.) Later this week, students will then begin oral presentations. Students will take on the role of a travel agent with the goal of convincing audience members to visit their cities. Presentations will be 2-3 minutes in length.

Week of Jan 21 - 25 Hello Panther families, I hope you all had a wonderful 3 day weekend. On Friday, I challenged the students to reflect on the accomplishments of the man we celebrated with a day off, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. When students return, they will complete researching and note-taking of their selected city and move into creating the slide-show for their cities.

Week of Jan 14 - 18 Hello Panther families, We are entering our second week of the City Planning unit. We spent last week resetting classroom and school expectations, and beginning the research portion of the unit. Black History Research Project Due: Wednesday February 27, 2019
Week of Feb 25 - Mar 1 Hello Panther families, We are now towards the end of the our Black History Research Project. Students have chosen their historically significiant African American leader and done the necessary research to complete the project. Students are now working on creating their final research project and choosing the manner in which they present. Students will have the choice of creating a Tri-fold Board, a song, or a poem. Students may also choose to create a Google slideshow presentation or perform an Autobiographical Narration. Once projects are submitted, we will then move on to the oral presenation part of the project.
