Dear Room 120 Families, It is hard to believe we have been at work for 5 weeks in 1st grade. I am very happy to see my students using leadership language and skills throughout the day. We are working on Leadership/Citizenship in Social Studies. They are learning many important words: cooperation, responsibility, proactive behavior, proactive choices and more. We are working on learning and practicing The Golden Rule, too. There are times throughout the week that we need to stop and regroup to review the expectations of the class. So many are remembering with these review/reminders but some are having difficulties applying some aspects of leadership. If your child talks about a refocus sheet, please remember that I am working on redirecting and improving their ability to make proactive choices. If they have get a refocus sheet it is to be considered a tool to help make changes toward leadership abilities. Our unit this week in Language Arts is Where We LIve . If you have a family photo of a place in Sacramento or California (even places in America your child has visited) that you would like to share I would truly appreciate if you could send it to me via email. I think it is great for your students to make connections between their personal experiences and topics at school. I hope you were able to get onRaz-Kids at home. Here is the information just in case you weren’t able to get on last week. Please let me know if you are having trouble. www.raz-kids.com KID’S LOGIN (big green button on right) TEACHER USER NAME: kmattern0 Your child knows his/her password code. He/she will click his/her name, click on password picture A quick reminder: If you would like to order books from Scholastic the deadline for this order was today but I can extend it one more day if you’d like to get online tonight or tomorrow during the day. 1. Go online to: scholastic.com/newparent Look up my name: Mrs. Mattern Or enter our Class Code QT8Q6 Follow the instructions to place your order online by: 9/05/2017(extended through tomorrow night) Thank you for taking time to read the message each week!

Dear Room 120 Families, First grade continues to be busy, busy! Last week each child got an opportunity to use their Chrome Books. They are using a reading site called Raz-Kids and a math site, Zearn. Zearn is connected to our math curriculum, Eureka. Every lesson I teach in math can be practiced on Zearn. In class we are on M1L10 (Module 1- Lesson 10) Most will work quickly through lessons 1-10 as soon as they are consistently working on Zearn. This week they will be visiting Zearn as a station during our daily math rotations. I am sending login cards for Zearn. Please look for it in your child’s backpack. Raz-Kids allows for Listening to Reading during Daily 5 rotations. I entered each child’s reading level in order to have the book selection match their reading level. You will see a letter level that correlates to our number level. I have added a level chart at the bottom of this document to help you to know your child’s reading level. I will be using Raz-Kids for reading practice in specific skill lessons, too. Here are directions to access Raz-Kids at home: www.raz-kids.com KID’S LOGIN (big green button on right) TEACHER USER NAME: kmattern0 Your child knows his/her password code. He/she will click his/her name, click on password picture Online reading sites are great but I still want to see each child reading tangible books each day. During Read to Self in Daily 5 the children have books galore to read. I know many of you have a lot of books for you child and some of you frequent the library. I am always willing to send a book bag home with your child. Your child may read each book at his/her own pace then bring the bag back for a refill! I also have a Scholastic Book Club account that allows you to order books for reasonable prices. Of course, this is optional. Two ways to order: 1. Check off the books you want to order for your child and return this flyer to me with a check to Scholastic Book Clubs 9/01/2017 2. We will be having our first Family Movie Night this Friday at 6 PM in the gym! Please join us for some family time. (All students must be accompanied by an adult.) Please see attached flyer for more information. • Labor Day: School will be closed on Monday, September 4th. • Hope you're having a 'smooth"ie transition back to school! Dear Room 120 Familes, Today was an exciting day for our Mateys! KCRA was here to capture us viewing the eclipse for the news! Before going out we made a model of the eclipse process (some made a circle to be the sun, the moon or earth) Ask your child which he/she represented. Today we worked on quiet transitions and working in small groups independently for math and reading. Independent work allows me to work with small groups at their level. They are doing well learning the procedures for independent work time. Please refer to the newsletter sent last week to keep you aware of our weekly plan. The Unhomework choices will be added to the back of the newsletter this week. I will attach the Back to School slide show to this email. If you have further questions please email me. Sincerely, Mrs. Mattern For Matey Students and Families: Week of August 21st, 2017 • Action Teams: This week students will be completing their application for Action Teams in their classroom. A great conversation starter could be asking them which action team they are applying for and why. • Parent volunteers for Action Teams: At Back to School Night parents had the opportunity to volunteer their time to help with action teams! If you didn't get a chance to sign up, please use the following link to do so. https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSemjJgBjVv75FUvISr7EOIQ-_dXHgbe0qAQUU5OM0CL0BkaAA/viewform?usp=sf_link • Yearbooks for 2017-18 are available! We sure did have a great morning today! Starting the day off with Morning Meeting is a wonderful way to build a positive classroom community. We continue to learn about one another through sharing and through instruction regarding our procedures and expectations. Today we learned more about Habit 1: Be Proactive. Your 1st graders are learning about responsibility, integrity, trust, determination, kindness, positive choices and much more. We are practicing STOP! THINK! GO! STOP and get control of your emotions and movements. THINK of possible choices that are above the line (Democracy and Cooperation) GO with the proactive choice. They are understanding and it helps our day to run more smoothly. SNACKS- Unfortunately, some snacks are being taken by others outside of our class. The best solution to this is to have our snack basket in our room instead of in the cafeteria. Starting tomorrow I would like your child to bring their snack to class and put it in our snack basket. It would be best if the snack had your child’s name on it. They will still put their lunch boxes in the large bin in the cafeteria. I am looking forward to sharing classroom information at Back to School Night this Thursday. Please see attachments for more times. For Matey Students and Families: Week of August 14th, 2017 STORM: STORM has opened up a 6 week option! Please see attached flyer to get more information. Dear 120 Families, Last week was a fantastic first week of 1st grade! Our students are learning about The 7 Habits, behavior levels and much more. I am reviewing and practicing procedures with our class to help the learning day to run smoothly. If you would ask your child about ABOVE level behaviors that they see and do it would be a great way for them to share part of their day. Cooperation has been a key word for our first five days and will continue to be a focus. We will be reviewing The 7 Habits of Leaders this week and in the next few weeks. Each week I will send home a folder on Friday with a newsletter, papers from the school and corrected work. Please empty this folder and send it back to school on the following Monday. The newsletter that Mrs. Draper and I send home each Friday will help you to know what we are focusing on each week in class. Please dress your child in closed toed shoes each day for safety. On Monday and Wednesday each week our class has PE. Tennis shoes are preferred for PE on these days. You will receive Matey Messages each week via email. They are messages regarding whole school activities. The messages are listed below. Each email I send you will be on our website, too. In order to find my website please do the following: 1. Go to website np3k5.com 2. Pull down Teacher Sites 3. Find Karen McCoole (I will try to get this changed) 4. On Mrs. Mattern’s site (After clicking KMcCoole my name magically is correct) 5.
