Class Note – 08/28/17

Dear Room 120 Families,
First grade continues to be busy, busy! Last week each child got an opportunity to use their Chrome Books. They are using a reading site called Raz-Kids and a math site, Zearn.
Zearn is connected to our math curriculum, Eureka. Every lesson I teach in math can be practiced on Zearn. In class we are on M1L10 (Module 1- Lesson 10) Most will work quickly through lessons 1-10 as soon as they are consistently working on Zearn. This week they will be visiting Zearn as a station during our daily math rotations. I am sending login cards for Zearn. Please look for it in your child’s backpack.
Raz-Kids allows for Listening to Reading during Daily 5 rotations. I entered each child’s reading level in order to have the book selection match their reading level. You will see a letter level that correlates to our number level. I have added a level chart at the bottom of this document to help you to know your child’s reading level. I will be using Raz-Kids for reading practice in specific skill lessons, too. Here are directions to access Raz-Kids at home:

Your child knows his/her password code. He/she will click his/her name, click on password picture

Online reading sites are great but I still want to see each child reading tangible books each day. During Read to Self in Daily 5 the children have books galore to read. I know many of you have a lot of books for you child and some of you frequent the library. I am always willing to send a book bag home with your child. Your child may read each book at his/her own pace then bring the bag back for a refill!
I also have a Scholastic Book Club account that allows you to order books for reasonable prices. Of course, this is optional.

Two ways to order:

1. Check off the books you want to order for your child and return this flyer to me with a check to Scholastic Book Clubs 9/01/2017

2. Go online to: scholastic.com/newparent
Look up my name: Mrs. Mattern
Or enter our Class Code QT8Q6
Follow the instructions to place your order online by: 9/05/2017

For Matey Students and Families:
Week of August 28th, 2017
• It is going to be hot this week! We encourage parents to send a labeled water bottle to school for kids. Although water is provided, a personal water bottle really helps when conditions are this hot. We will keep an eye on weather. If conditions are unsafe, we will move kids indoors for recess. We anticipate morning recess being okay for the kids.
• Movie Night Friday, September 1: Boss Baby! We will be having our first Family Movie Night this Friday at 6 PM in the gym! Please join us for some family time. (All students must be accompanied by an adult.) Please see attached flyer for more information.
• Labor Day: School will be closed on Monday, September 4th.
• Hope you’re having a ‘smooth”ie transition back to school! Be sure to visit Edible Arrangements to get your “Back to School” smoothie for $1.99! See attached flyer for more information.
• Yearbooks for 2017-18 are available! Get a head start on buying your yearbook at $20 before the price jumps to $25! You can buy them online or complete the form to turn into the front office at https://natomasunified.org/np3e/matey-adventures/yearbooks/.
