Leah Abucayan, Inderkum High School, Class of 2011

Graphic Designer and Illustrator for CNN Digital

The next time you watch CNN, you may see the work of Inderkum High School’s own Leanza “Leah” Abucayan. This 2011 graduate, who also attended Two Rivers and Natomas Charter, knew in elementary that she wanted to make a living in art design. “At the age of 11 I had my own business crafting purses, bags, and wallets and I would sell custom duct tape pieces throughout middle school and high school,” said Leah. “Now by day, I design visuals for special news content for CNN as well as design the interface for the CNN mobile app. In my free time, I create commissioned duct tape art and branding logos for various start-up companies.” Leah thanks teachers like Mr. Contere, who was supportive and allowed her to expand her skillset in art. “He helped me run the Art Club and also got us permission to paint a mural in the sports wing that is still around today. Great teachers such as Mr. Contereas, Mrs. Novello, Mrs. Meindel, Ms. Pederson, Mr. Ford, and Mrs. Matthews got me to where I am, and I couldn’t do it without them.”
