Parent Empowerment Institute to focus on simple ways to help students excel

Free parent workshops on education issues ranging from Common Core state standards to course requirements for college admission will be provided Sept. 6 at Natomas Unified’s second annual Parent Empowerment Institute, titled “Steps to Success.”

The event, sponsored by NUSD’s Parent CORES, is scheduled from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Sept. 6 at  Inderkum High School. Registration is available at www.parentcores.com or by calling 567-5516. Free transportation is available to Natomas families that register in advance.

The focus of this year’s parent institute is on Natomas Unified’s Vision and Steps to Success. The Board-approved Vision is that, “All NUSD students graduate as college and career ready, productive, responsible and engaged global citizens.” Steps to Success is a system for accomplishing that vision by monitoring progress from kindergarten through 12th grade.

Dr. Nicoline Ambe will give the parent institute’s keynote speech, “Seven Steps to Raising a High Achiever,” providing parents with simple but effective strategies to help their children excel. Dr. Ambe is a special education teacher whose 17-year career as an instructor includes a decade teaching law, political science and women’s studies at various Canadian universities.

Workshops will be presented by the following NUSD staff:

  • Common Core Math and English- Language Arts Standards, by Jodie Cooper-Hoffman, Director of School Leadership and Support
  • A-to-G Requirements and College Readiness, by counseling staff
  • Special Education and Mental Health, by psychologists
  • English Language Development and Specially Designed Academic Instruction in English (SDAIE), by Lore Carrillo, teacher on special assignment
  • The District’s New App, by Jim Sanders, Director of Communications

The free event also will include lunch, raffle prizes, an education and community resource fair – and a free back-to-school goodie bag for the first 100 families. Participants in the resource fair tentatively include the UC Davis Early Academic Outreach Program, American River College, California State University-Sacramento, Natomas Schools Foundation, Greater Sacramento Urban League, National Alliance on Mental Illness, Child Action, Head Start, 4th R and many other groups. For more information about the event, call 567-5516.
