Principal Lore Carrillo had some advice for 8th-graders at Natomas Gateways Middle School’s annual promotion ceremony Wednesday (May 24).

“As you enter high school, take the lessons you have learned and the sense of community you have built with you,” she said.

Carrillo urged the teens to:

1)    Be committed

2)    Be respectful

3)    Be responsible

4)    Be bold

5)    Be prepared

6)    Be on time

7)    Be-lieve in yourself

“Once you cross this stage, you are no longer in middle school,” Carrillo added. “You will be high school students, with four short years between you and college and careers. Know that no matter what challenges arise in those four years, you can overcome them. You have everything in you needed to succeed.”

Carrillo complimented the 8th-graders for their character, tenacity, kindness and grit. She said the promotion ceremony is a celebration of their accomplishments at Natomas Gateways and a commitment to graduate from high school as the “Class of 2021.”

“I’ve had the privilege of watching you struggle and fail, take those struggles and failures and use them to grow and mature, learn, and succeed,” she said. “You have made Gateways a place where every student matters, where every student is seen, cared for, supported, and encouraged.

“You’ve done incredible things this year: You’ve taken a stand against bullying and committed to being upstanders rather than bystanders, you’ve visited colleges, and planned projects, and launched rockets, but most importantly, you’ve helped build a community that will last long after you’ve left us.”
