Natomas Unified School District (NUSD) is committed to engaging our families, staff, and community to support student success. We want to specifically thank families of students in elementary/TK-8 schools for completing our K-8 Learning Recovery and Summer Program Opportunities Survey a few weeks ago. Based on the feedback we received, we understand that both students and families are in need of a break and are looking forward to some down time to rest up and enjoy what hopefully will be a more “normal” summer. However, there were families that indicated a desire for some summer activities opportunities.With this understanding, we will be offering different opportunities for students in grades K-8 to participate in camp style programs throughout the summer.
In addition, we will continue to provide high school students with the opportunity to participate in completing high school required course work, as well as college and career programs.
Along with the programs described below, NUSD staff are currently working on providing families resources that their students can use this summer (at their discretion) to provide ongoing opportunities for engaging learning activities. These resources are being designed to allow students and families to find learning opportunities that fit their summer plans and life schedules. More information regarding these resources and how to access them will be shared before the end of the school year.
Below is a list of programs being offered this summer and steps to take to learn more about the possibilities of your student being able to participate.
Elementary:
Kindergarten Readiness Program (TK-Kindergarten): Kinder Readiness is designed to prepare children for Transitional Kindergarten (TK) or Kindergarten (K) success in the upcoming school year. Enrollment is only available for those registered for TK or K for the 2022-2023 school year. The program is open to all eligible children regardless of what school they are registered to attend. This 4-week program will operate on the American Lake School site from June 6th through July 1st, from 8am-12pm daily. SMUD Museum of Science and Curiosity, MOSAC (K-6th Grade): NUSD has again partnered with MOSAC to provide Natomas K-6 students with the opportunity to participate in a week-long Science Camp. This opportunity will be provided at no cost to our families. Your students’ current (2021-2022) grade level can determine which week they could attend, as camps will start in the middle of June and run through August. Each week-long camp runs daily from 9am-4pm. In addition, families can select to utilize NUSD nutrition services and transportation (to and from the camp) for students, again at no charge to families. Priority for enrollment for each of these programs will be given to students based on need. Girls Mentoring Program (6th – 8th grade): The “I-VIBE Program” is a mentoring program to assist approximately 20 middle school girls with subjects such as Thought Leadership, Meditation & Yoga, Nutrition, Self Advocacy, and Digital Footprint. I-VIBE stands for “I Am Victorious, Independent, Bold, and Empowered”. The program will be held at Natomas Middle School and will develop confidence, self-empowerment, and pride through goal-oriented activities. The program will take place July 11th – 15th at Natomas Middle School, from 9:00am to 12:00pm. Confirmation of your student’s registration will be provided by Friday, May 13th. Space is limited, and a waitlist will be created if we receive an overwhelming response from families. Students will be taken off of the waitlist as space becomes available.
Bike Tech Summer Camp (7th – 8th Grade): NUSD is partnering with JIBE to provide a one-week Bike Tech summer camp for 12 -16 middle school students at Inderkum High School. This program will provide current middle school students an opportunity to learn about bikes, how to repair them, and provide time for daily rides. This one-week camp will run June 27 – July 1, 2022, from 9am to 3pm. Priority for enrollment for each of these programs will be given to students based on need. Special Education:
Extended School Year, ESY (PK- Adult Grade): ESY is specifically for our special education students that have ESY as part of their Individualized Education Plan (IEP). The purpose of ESY is to help students maintain skills and avoid regression, which may negatively impact progress made toward IEP goals. ESY services are provided for 20 days during the summer when the regular school program is not in session. Please note this 4-week program, please speak with your student’s case manager to determine if your student is eligible.
High School:
Credit Recovery/Acceleration (9th-12th Grade): High school students will be provided the opportunity for credit recovery and acceleration. There will be a possibility of up to 6 weeks, with three two-week sessions for each school, in which students can earn up to 5 credits (1 semester course) every two weeks. This six-week program will begin June 6th and operate through July 22nd (except for the week of 4th of July) with classes meeting daily from 8am-2:30pm. English Learners (9th-12th Grade): The summer program for our English Learners will focus on providing direct support to high school students enrolled in Summer School for the purpose of earning credits for classes needed for graduation and A-G.
Summer Internships with MOSAC (10th-12th Grade): MOSAC will be working with NUSD staff to recruit NUSD high school students to receive a summer internship with MOSAC to support summer camps programs. City of Sacramento Summer @ City Hall (11th-12th Grade): City Hall hosts an annual program called “Summer @ City Hall”. This year it will be for 22-23 high school juniors and seniors, allowing students to learn about the local government process and to become active members of their community. Students also complete a 42-hour wellness component that includes various workshop topics including: Career Exploration and Readiness, Financial Literacy, Personal Mental Wellness, and Resume Development. Students receive, upon completion of the program, a stipend and five high school elective credits. The six-week program will operate 5 days a week, from 8:30am – 12:00pm. Since early March, multiple communications have been provided to students and families regarding this opportunity to apply. Youth Workforce Program (11th-12th Grade): The Youth Workforce Program is for incoming Juniors and Seniors to work this summer with local businesses with paid job opportunities or internships. NUSD students will gain valuable work experience to build their resumes and participate in FUN and interactive workforce workshops. The program includes a one-week workshop series, a job/interview fair, and a job assignment.
