Multicultural Festival: A Blend of Food, Art, Crafts, Performances to Celebrate Nation’s Second Most Diverse School District

More than 1,500 people attended Natomas Unified’s first district-wide Multicultural Festival at Inderkum High School last weekend. The event was a display of how our different cultural foods, dances, arts and crafts, music, and more are to be celebrated and appreciated by one another. Watch this highlight video of just some of the fun and education offered to families.

So many people and groups are to thank in making this event possible! Thank you for your time, talent, and your commitment to show our students and families the power of diversity.

Hot off the Press and Now Available! Feast & Learn Cookbook Highlights NUSD Diversity with Cultural Recipes Demonstrated by NUSD Community

Along with the performances, goodies, and good company, Multicultural Festival attendees also brought home our first cookbook. The “Feast and Learn at the NUSD Table” Cookbook features recipes from our staff, families, and students. Inside the colorful pages there are instructions and demonstration videos of popular foods for special cultural days/events and everyday meals that can be enjoyed.

Pull up a seat at the NUSD table and celebrate the flavors and stories that make Natomas Unified unique by cooking along with us. Access the digital cookbook here.

Quilting: Weaving History and Art at H. Allen Hight

Quilting helped shape not only the art of America, but the culture and politics of our country, as well. Watch as students at H. Allen Hight learned about how quilts were used during the Underground Railroad, in Native American culture, and political movements. Students made their own quilts that are now on display at the school.

Athletes Committed: Bringing Together High School and Elementary Student Athletes

Athletes Committed is a club that helps younger students build skills in and out of sports, as well as build high school students’ mentoring skills. The club was founded this school year by Eric Fong, a teacher and coach at Inderkum High School, with the help of Lyndsay Byrd, a Teacher on Special Assignment at Natomas Park Elementary. “It’s a club built of leaders, and we felt it was important as athletes that they have many things in common to be successful off the field,” Fong said.

Students have found value in the partnership saying it has helped them forge relationships with one another. Watch this video to see the student athletes in action.

We are excited to offer the Summer Youth Workforce program for the third year in partnership with the Natomas Chamber of Commerce and SAFE Credit Union. This program is open to incoming 10th – 12th grade high school students who want to obtain job and life skills to prepare them for the future.

Students will learn such skills as interviewing for a job, searching for employment, dress etiquette, resume building, networking, and personal budgeting. At the end of the week-long session, they will have the opportunity to interview with representatives of the Natomas business community for potential job opportunities.

If students do not receive a job offer at the end of the session, they will be equipped with a resume and skills to apply to future jobs. The series of workshops will be from June 10-14. Students who are offered a job or internship at the end of the workshops will coordinate their summer work schedule with the employer. Apply here by May 1 at 4 PM.
