If Leroy Greene Academy had a student “Hall of Fame,” there’s a good chance that senior Mack Gregory would be in it, because:

·        He’s a straight-A student

·        He’s taking six Advanced Placement (AP) courses this year: Statistics, U.S. History, U.S. Government, Biology, English Literature and Human Geography. Last year, he took AP Calculus, English Language, and Environmental Science

·        He has been an LGA student leader for three years, serving as school Historian for two years and as Technology Commissioner for two  years

·        He is widely known and appreciated for his voluntarism, including serving as a Friday Night Live mentor to counsel a middle-school student about the risks of driving drunk, using drugs, and other risky behavior; helping LGA staff resolve technology problems; raising the American flag and taking it down each day at LGA; running sound equipment for school events; and serving as the timekeeper for school athletic teams.

Teacher Ben Odell said “Mack works tirelessly to ensure not only his success, but his school’s success as well,” and that he’s “the embodiment of a successful student between his grades, extracurricular (service) and cultural mindset.

Apart from school, Mack has achieved the highest rank in Boy Scouting, Eagle Scout, an honor that takes years to achieve and requires an extensive community service project that the scout oversees. Mack led a group of about 40 people in building gardens at Woodbine Elementary School in Sacramento.

Asked what sparked his priorities of patriotism, service and educational achievement, Mack said that scouting has been a big influence. He takes Scout Law very seriously: “A Scout is trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean and reverent.”

Mack describes himself as passionate about computers, an innovator, someone who likes to “think outside the box.” He also plays the guitar. His favorite book is George Orwell’s “1984.” In his spare time, one thing he enjoys most is camping with other Scouts.

Mack has been accepted for enrollment at five colleges or universities, thus far, and he’s awaiting word from his top choice: Stanford University.

Mack also was chosen recently for district “Vision” honors, recognizing him among students who exemplify Natomas Unified’s Board-approved Vision that, “All NUSD students graduate as college and career ready, productive, responsible, and engaged global citizens.”

No wonder LGA Principal Leslie Sargent did not hesitate when asked to recommend a student for a spotlight story: Mack Gregory.

“He thoroughly completes tasks assigned to him in a timely fashion and is forward thinking,” Principal Sargent said. “Mack comes up with solutions and acts upon what needs to be done before being asked. He is a remarkable young man who is a joy to be around. He is a shining example of a college and career ready Lion.
