Are you new to our class?

Dear Parents and student,

Welcome to Witter Ranch Elementary!  I look forward to quickly learning your child and his/her needs. Please communicate anything you think I might need to know about your child and his/her education.  If your child has not brought the necessary supplies needed, please have those to school as soon as possible.  Please review the information attached and contact me if you have any questions or concerns.  I look forward to working closely with you and your student the remainder of this year!

Language Arts

For Language Arts, we use Treasures. This is a phonics based program with emphasis on reading comprehension.  In other words, it is a system of teaching reading and spelling that stresses basic symbol-sound relationships and their application in decoding words and comprehension.

The most important skills for third graders is reading and reading comprehension.  Strong reading skills is directly related to how well children do in all other areas of the curriculum, as well as their performance on standardized tests.  Please continue to encourage your son or daughter to read at least 20 minutes per day at home. I highly encourage your child to read Accelerated Reading books, which are books leveled to your child’s specific reading level.

Mathematics

For Mathematics, we use Envision Math.  Envision Math has daily problem-based interactive learning followed by visual learning strategies, which deepen conceptual understanding by making meaningful connections for students and delivering strong, sequential visual/verbal connections through the visual learning bridge in every lesson.

The most important thing for your third grader to know for math is basic addition, subtraction, and multiplication facts by heart.  Memorizing these facts will give your child a huge advantage in third grade.

History-Social Science

For History- Social science, we use Reflections.  The historical events within this program are presented within a chronological and geographical context.  Students will learn about the significant people, places, and events that have shaped California and the entire country.

Science

For Science, we use California Science.  This program investigates Physical Sciences, Life Sciences, and Earth Science.

Additional Information:

Field Trips, Parent Volunteers, Classroom Visits

Parents are welcome to come on any field trips, but need finger print clearance/background check.  Classroom volunteers, please let me know at least one day in advance so that I can plan around any non-classroom activities.

Birthdays, Celebrations, etc.

Treats to celebrate your child’s birthday are welcome.  We enjoy our treats at third recess (12:50).  Cupcakes and boxed juices usually work best because they aren’t difficult to serve.

Communication

In order for your child to have a successful learning experience it is important for you to be cooperative and enthusiastic with his/her learning.  If you feel the need to speak with me please call 916-567-5620 before or after school hours.  Email is the best option though at [email protected] for any concerns or questions.
