Objectives
Students will be able to identify story elements (characters, setting, and events) and sequence main events using a story map.
Assessment/CFU
Teacher can write the following on the board and have students provide a written response:
Choose a character from the story and write about why this character is important to the story. What are they like? How do they influence the events of the story? Do they change or stay the same throughout the story?
*There is an "exit ticket" included on the website with the lesson, but it is more of a quick activity, but doesn't serve as a CFU related to the standards addressed in this lesson.
Opening/Warmup/Connecting Prior Knowledge
Before we begin reading, we are going to talk about the word diversity. Ask students what they think diversity could mean (pair share, group discussion, etc. before bringing back to whole group discussion).
Diversity simply means differences. Have students complete a concept map for the word 'Diversity' (attached in website link). What are some things, situations, or places that bring different people together?
(Possible responses: school, church, weddings, funerals, vacations, neighborhoods, culture, friendship, animals, hobbies, jobs, sports, entertainment, disasters, public events, etc.)
Through this concept map discussion, students will understand that although people, in general, have many differences, we are more alike than we are different and diversity can be a way of bringing people together rather than separating people.
As we begin reading, tell students to think about both differences and similarities between the characters in the story.
