Objectives
Using the novel "Where the Fern Grows", students will analyze the main character Billy Colman.
Students can identify character traits.
Students can cite evidence to support a particular character trait
Students can compile character traits and organize into a paragraph including a direct quote from the text of the book.
Assessment/CFU
Students are assessed for organization of thoughts and also on conventions.
Opening/Warmup/Connecting Prior Knowledge
Discuss as a class previous discussions of character traits.
Day 1: As a class, record character traits on a google doc (see Day 1 example)
Day 2: Explain the next task is to connect evidence from the novel to support a character trait and model how to cite the evidence on the google doc created on Day 1. (See Day 2 example of citing evidence)
Day 3: Explain to students they will now write a paragraph about character (Billy Colman for this example) using the evidence cited in Day 2. They are also required at this time to find and use a direct quote from the book to included in their paragraph. (See Student Example).
