Assessment/CFU
Optional: Build Background, TE, 2092
Observational Walk (Students use sketch books or science/Amazing Insect journals to write pictures, letters or words about observations as they walk around the room looking at different resources on tables, e.g., living beetles, exhibits of beetles, books, models, and pictures. After the walk, students share their observations with one or two other students comparing what they saw and learned. Each group should develop 1-3 questions to share that they have about beetles (precursor to KWL chart).
KWL Chart (This will take 5 days to complete.)
- Day 1 focuses on students sharing what they already know about beetles on as teacher charts their “knowledge and facts” in column 1; include students’ misconceptions as these can be changed if facts prove them incorrect.
- Days 2/3 will be used to generate and add questions about what students want to learn about beetles in the second column.
- Day 4 will include a list in column 3 of what students have learned during the week.
- Day 5 will culminate in a writing activity about what students think are the most important facts they have learned about beetles during the week.)
Beetle Drawing:
Teacher models drawing of a beetle and its component parts having students discuss beetles as they each draw his or her own beetle picture.
(This should be done before reading the Big Book Beetles on Day 2 and will then be used to compare similarities and differences between their realistic depictions and fantasy illustrations on Day 3.)
Opening/Warmup/Connecting Prior Knowledge
Chants about beetles (will be incorporated throughout Part 1); available in resource packet of CAG
