Lesson Materials/Resources
No Materials/Resources attachedObjectives
- Develop foundational reading and writing skills found in Treasures TE guidelines
- Analyze and connect science vocabulary and charts to lessons learned
- Recognize and identify components of insects and beetles
- Apply knowledge and skills to produce webs and pre-writing ideas, and to imagine and explain a hypothetical discovery
Assessment/CFU
Extension Activity:
Compare and contrast differences between realistic depictions and fantasy illustrations kids created utilizing a Venn Diagram. (This is a continuation from Day 2.)
Extension Activity:
Have children imagine and draw a newly discovered beetle or insect. Ask them to give it a name and write a sentence about this newly discovered animal and how they know it is a beetle or an insect. (8.15.2013 - Share article about new mammal discovery, the olinguito, in Ecuador and Colombia, South America; discovered by Smithsonian researcher.)
Opening/Warmup/Connecting Prior Knowledge
Teachers will follow the Treasures TE guidelines and materials to deliver instruction in Foundations of Reading and Writing.
Postpone Oral Vocabulary Cards Activity, TE p. 2112 until Day 5.
Re-visit the KWL Chart:
Continue with student questions reviewing those posed from the previous day. Check with students to see if any have been answered through text, discussion, or observation. If so, record the information in the column 3. If new questions come up, add to column 2.
Beetle Pictorial:
(Teacher guided diagram including labeling of the parts of a beetle). Before the lesson, teacher lightly sketches a beetle diagram on a large chart. He or she uses dark markers or colors to mark over the pencil during direct instruction lesson. Students focus on the emerging pictorial during the explicit lesson as the teacher poses questions and shares information about the beetle.
Re-read Big Book, Beetles:
Students help teacher begin a web activity based on Beetles. After several examples have been provided and added to the web, students complete their own webs (which they may use later for their writing on Day 5).
